The New Moon in Virgo

On to the new moon…

Quite a conjunction or new moon we have here! While there are planetary changes, shifts in direction, and other factors to consider starting on the 1st and 2nd, and lasting for some time into 2025, there are no close aspects to either the Sun or the Moon in this lunation! (Note: In the four years I have been creating these reports, I have chosen tight orbs and narrow aspects, because I wanted to be more concise and considerate of my readers}

There is a branch of astrological research that focuses on just the relationship of the Sun to the Moon phases and its aspects as being the chief indicators of one’s life path, our priorities, our gifts and skills etc. While I give credence to this approach, my more traditional outlook also includes the Ascendant, and that these three are the “power points” of any person’s chart/life!

So, it seems obvious that this new moon can be read exclusively as being a Virgo influence on each and all of us… Rather than go through all of those qualities and traits, which can be easily searched, I will offer other views and perspectives on what this new moon holds for us. What I will offer is a quick synopsis from all the various sources: that it is a time of inner work, reflection, circumspection, it is a time period when it would be best to promote a greater sense of self acceptance and trying to achieve a greater sense of that elusive quality we call “peace of mind.”

Here is another summary that highlights these qualities. It comes from Lena, of the Shamanic School. She writes:

“This new moon supports all manner of self-care commitments, healthy choices, and a desire for improving self and your environment. Don’t get bogged down in the minutia of details around non-important issues, and don’t get distracted by all the little niggly things that need attention. Instead look at the big picture of change and tackle the one thing that shows up as the biggest bread crumb for you right now.

It is a good time to look at whatever resistance you may have to change and practice flexibility. If you can be proactive with change you will be ahead of the game. So pick something you can change that pushes you a bit outside your comfort level and go for it. Once you commit, if it is the right bread crumb, observe how everything around the decision comes together to support you. And, if there is something in the way, like your fear or resistance or overthinking, you may experience that as well. The energy wants us to move forward so whatever you might be engaged in, do it without hesitation.”

Again, while many give the emphasis to the new moon, and its mutable qualities under the sign of Virgo, my research and conclusions prefer to emphasize the movements of the outer planets as being more significant.

This is, in part, due to the ruler of Virgo, which is Mercury, is just fresh off its retrograde and is still back in Leo, and now beginning to move forward again… It takes time and a reorientation for Mercury to be at its best!

While this transition in mental energy moves forward, there can be cases of confusion and brain fog while we try to sort out our next steps forward… Be sure to give yourself rest and brain-enriching foods throughout this next week to help ease the reawakening of your energies and intellection.

To offer a little more insight to this Mercury situation, and to recall that Mercury and Uranus have been “square-dancing” with each other for some time, here is what Kapatcha has to say about this:

“ This third square to Uranus happens on September 7th! This is a long, extreme, intense, traumatic, and enlightening conversation around sudden changes in our values and needs that can be extremely uncomfortable. The fact that it is occurring at the same time as Venus opposite Neptune, and Mars squaring Neptune, brings it to the realm of intimate relationship ideals or dreams (Neptune) needing to come down into earthly reality or let go if they were fantasy. Some real wakeups and shakeups not only in the realm of personal relationships but also governmental relationships….

How does Uranus do this? With sudden, surprising, often shocking events, information, downloads, wins/losses, and other phenomena that serve to destabilize our old way of doing things/business/make money, so we are either inspired or pushed to change. … Let’s remember that Uranus is the personal UNconscious, and it is therefore often projected onto forces (people, institutions, etc.) outside our egoic control. Therefore, as always, we can be a force of change or forced to change. We may be catalysts that wake others up, or we may be woken up to patterns and conditioned responses to life that are no longer appropriate, working, or true for our unique destiny. “

So, now continuing on to my discussion of the important planetary prelude, and how its lasting influence and effects will begin to reveal themselves in the days and months ahead…

On September 1st, Pluto returns briefly to Capricorn until mid November… while Uranus goes retrograde on the 2nd until January of 2025.

Because these planets are the transpersonal ones, their impact and influences can be both broad and deep… They are less personal, except in an unconscious, archetypal way, as they reside deep in our psyches and are cross-cultural, universal, and able to influence national or even global events…

When Pluto ever so slowly moves back a few minutes and crosses the line that marks the entry back into Capricorn, we are asked to begin-again to start an assessment of where we are; as a person, and as a nation; then be deliberate about that assessment process.

Some astrologers will focus on the powerful impact of the 29th degree, the sextile to Neptune, and what this energy will express or release. For me, i tend to disregard the alarmist side of the argument with its ominous warnings, and prefer to see this backward motion for the next three to four months as a time for honest reflection; a crucial time to come to terms with whatever parts of our psyche and our society remain imbalanced or askew and then ask: What are the ways could I/we rectify or at least alleviate the accumulated tensions of the forces that vie for our energy and attention!

Pluto is all about transmutation; it can put us in the corner and ask, what are going to do now? It will offer us a difficult , challenging and alchemical way through, but will never allow for trying to get around any issue we face!

It is as if Pluto declares, you must be open to unsettling, and possibly dramatic shifts and changes if you want to move forward to make any kind of soulful or social progress.

Here is what astrologer, author, and teacher Dorothy Oja has to say about this Pluto return to Capricorn. She writes:

“September 1 2024, holds within its aspectual patterns powerful cosmic energy. On this day Pluto returns to 29 Capricorn, the final degree of its sign for the last time. It turns Direct at this degree on 10/11/24, and then leaves Capricorn never to return in our lifetimes or for another 248 years.

A planet at the 29th degree is completing its cycle, making a statement expressing a summation of its essence and its cycle active since 2008. Have we achieved the mastery Capricorn strives for in protecting and safeguarding the structures people, society and communities rely upon? … Pluto in Capricorn required an examination of trust – what, whom, or which systems are worthy of trust or those that have failed to keep our trust.

As Pluto reaches 29 Capricorn it immediately makes a sextile (60 deg.) to Neptune at 29 Pisces, also hovering at the end of its sign. These are the two outermost planets indicate an urgent pivot in our collective resources, politics, sense of idealism and the dreams we hold for the future, armed with the lessons of the past years. …

Those with planets around 27-28, 29 and 0 degrees will feel these energies most poignantly with concurring needs to make dramatic changes or to navigate them when they show up spontaneously.

We are feeling the societal and political shifts in the microcosm of our lives as well as the macrocosm. The Moon in Leo speaks to the heart;, to love and the creative quality of our lives and how various pressures affect the quality we want to achieve. …

We must not lose our way or be confused by falsity, lies and manipulation. How we conduct our lives does matter. What happens internationally to others, our co-inhabitants on this planet matters too! Decency, integrity, honesty, character matter and they always will, even though modern life often suggests easier paths to win at all costs…. If one part of the system is ailing the entire system is affected.”

The other powerful and potentially disruptive energies and effects come from the planet Uranus, which begins its slow backward motion on the 2nd.

Uranus almost always brings with him the promise and perils of change; He is the agent of transformation which can come to us as revelation or appear to us as a chaotic energy that is sure to transform whatever it hits, whatever it touches!

In my reading, the most enlightening summary of Uranus retrograde comes from the writings of astrologer and social commentator, Elisabeth Grace. She describes the nature and possibilities of Uranus in these ways:

“ When a planet is retrograde, the energy it represents is best expressed by turning inward, instead of outward. When direct, Uranus tends to rebel against the status quo set by others. When retrograde, Uranus needs to set itself free from limits that are self-imposed. So if you have a planet between 23 and 27 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius, you can expect an intense second hit of issues you’ve recently experienced involving a need for innovation, being yourself without compromise, and sudden upsets of the status quo. … Keywords for Uranus include lightning, aviation, seismic activity, revolutions, astrology, uranium, gender-benders, genetic mutations, eccentrics, technology, accidents, wake-up calls — and FREEDOM. When Uranus turns retrograde on Sunday, it gives us until January 31, 2025 to review our thinking about what it means to live in a “free” society.”
