The seasons have now shifted into Autumn, and we can begin to welcome all the colorful and soulful lessons concerning balance and equity; those qualities and lessons that are recognized as an essential part of our appreciation of the sign of Libra, and with her, this eclipse and New Moon!

(For those of you who follow a more eclectic and interfaith path, this will be quite a week for learning, celebrating, and understanding the wisdom teachings and inspirational messages that can be found! On the 2nd, there is the solar eclipse and also the celebration of the Angels in the Western Roman Church; on the 3rd, we have the beginning of the Jewish High Holidays with Rosh Hashana; on the 4th, the is the commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology! All this, and it began for me on Michealmas, and with the inspiration of the Tibetan Cho ceremony!)

This is the second of the eclipses in this Fall season, and the one that symbolically reaches back into a previous eclipse cycle. It will be the last one in Libra until 2033! ( Eclipses, like the Nodes, move counterclockwise or backward through the Zodiac)

As April Elliot Kent wryly remarks:

“Libra is the sign of relationship, but as an air sign it isn’t the most touchy-feely. A Libra friend is fond of pointing out that it’s the only zodiac sign represented by an inanimate object. She says it to be funny–as though Libra represents a triumph of engineering over feeling…But there’s a deeper truth in Libra’s scales of justice, a cool, elegant, mathematical precision to the Libran mind and worldview.”

The task of this eclipse and its connection to the New Moon and to the Black Moon Lilth, begins to inform us about any unfinished or delayed responses we have; whatever situation, problem, or challenge that has been postponed, delayed, or denied…

And with the alchemical energies of this powerful eclipse, we can begin again to address what might have been rushed through or left unfinished; mired in doubt, or left along or left behind in paralysis or confusion.

Solar Eclipses can be best understood as a super-powered New Moons, which have the potential to create what I refer to as a cosmic portal; It is an opening to the infinite that allows cosmic energies to manifest more directly and for divine graces to flow in! There is an opening, awakening, or new seed planted in a specific area of your life that can last up to 12 months or until a trigger planet – most often it is Mars- crosses that degree… (some ancient astrologers said that the effect lasted as many years as the eclipse did in minutes or hours! In that case, the totality is 5 minutes… or 5 years!).

With this in mind, I urge you to pay particular attention to where 10 degrees of Libra falls in your chart! (the range is commonly given as 5-15, but 10 degrees is exact! (I use 2 degrees or between 8-12)

Depending on the house in your chart where this 10th degree lands or is situated, there will be a focal point for your potentials and pitfalls; this place of letting go, and/or letting it be… A secondary or more complete look can also be in order; Where 10 degrees of the other seasonal or Cardinal signs ( Aries, Cancer, Capricorn) are located could indicate other activated situations or conditions…

Solar Eclipses are more visceral, physical, and material; we may be more able to get in better touch with our health, our soulful well being, and body vitality; we may have stark realizations about how our present situation, health, or sense of vitality and security has been informed by the past.

Solar eclipses are more global and we can see them being more wide-ranging by being active and present in our world; Eclipses affect environmental and governmental stability, structures, and can effect any physical or environmental changes. It is often the case when there is an eclipse that we will witness a releasing of the ignored or the denied, and as a result, we be able to see what the serious symptoms of tension and imbalance are or have become- in our lives and in our world!

A more concise and a mainly interpersonal way of looking at the influence and direction of this Libran eclipse (with its focus on relationships, partnerships, agreements and contracts etc.) is to comprehend that some things will have to break up; some things in your life will have to breakdown; some things will have to change before you can shift, adapt, and make room for a breakthrough!

A complementary view about these tests and challenges associated with both Libra and this eclipse comes to us from Astrologer, Say Wilder.

Writing in the Well & Good Newsletter, she offers us these insights that she has gathered from her own life and from her clients. She writes:

“We’ve actually been feeling the energy (and living through its astrological consequences) since July 2023—and it won’t officially end until January 2025.

When it comes to this month’s eclipse on October 2, it’ll be about “seeing the situations that aren’t working and [asking], ‘What’s this? What’s working? What’s not working?’” says Wilder. “It’s going to be a lot of cutting out people and situations that aren’t serving you.” What does this mean? That, since July 2023, we’ve been dealing with changes and deep realizations about our relationships (platonic and romantic) and our independence in them. It is a time of powerful lunation which could be a powerful trigger, turning point or beginning of a new harmonious partnership. Let it be open for rapid changes and opportunities to invite new relations in our life.”

“The most important thing during this time, though, is to not control the narrative— whether that’s for yourself or for others. The best thing you can do is let go, and let people (and yourself) come to their own conclusions on their own time. If you try to control your relationships during this time, you’re risking it ending in disaster. Remember: Eclipses are about fated changes. So if your relationship is coming to an end during this time, then it was probably meant to happen. Don’t fight it; let it go.”

A little more forceful, direct, and challenging point of view comes from the group called AstrologyDome. Here is what they have to say:

“This eclipse signals the end of a chapter in our relational evolution. We are now called to step forward with authenticity, truth, and a new relational skillset; breaking free from old conditioning and patterns that no longer serve us. A new level of relational depth and conscious awareness is emerging, leading us toward a more aligned and peaceful way of relating to ourselves and others. This eclipse opens the door to exciting, fated connections, and paths that support this elevated consciousness.”

Similar to New Moons, eclipses indicate that something might need to die away in order for the new to have enough room to break through. Surrender is key; not in the sense of helplessness, but in order to release old, dysfunctional patterns of thought and behavior. This particular eclipse on the 2nd, is a South Node eclipse. It is known as the Dragon’s tail, and might stir up conditions, and dig up experiences of the past that you thought were long buried or resolved!

“Signs this eclipse is touching you

Following are a few signs that you’re inside this New Moon’s Eclipse Zone.

An event far away, beyond your control, brings an unexpected change in direction.
Something doesn’t go as you thought it would. Important plans are delayed.
Time is accelerated. There’s too much to do. Big changes seem to happen overnight.
A startling truth—like someone’s true character—is revealed.
You’re forced to handle an unexpected difficulty.

This eclipse is a more karmic condition; Its energies and influences will ask us to let go of any extremes or rigid patterns; whereever we have been unyielding, or where, in our lives, we are the most out of balance, this eclipse can bring it into a harsh focus; That attentive perception displays where we have been the least flexible and adaptable, or put the spotlight on what parts of our lives where we have allowed or permitted our rigid ego to tyrannize us!

People from the past, or or those who you are the most concerned with, can appear on the scene, and they will seem to behave in inexplicable ways. They can bring out “The Old You” or The person you used to be,

the one you thought you’d outgrown! Their presence acts as a reminder that you really haven’t changed all that much; you’re still the same old mess you were!… Now this is not about shame, guilt, or taking some severe inventory of your short comings…

As I see it, the most constructive and evolutionary way we can understand the “gift’ of this eclipse is to welcome it as an invitation to humility, and that you will receive the grace and healing necessary to more directly release the ego’s hold on you… It is an experience of realizing your need for self acceptance and for your greater appreciation for the things that have positively changed,; and tp know in your heart, that there really is no fear of returning to behavior, ideas, or feelings that have been truly outgrown!

Now, with your increased attention and growing wareness, you are able to understand yourself better, cope more effectively with life’s stresses, and learn from its valuable insights – all points of wisdom, compassion, and honesty that are positively shaping your evolutionary future!
