From my studies, and from reading the thoughts of other astrologers, there is a consensus that since the eclipse earlier this month, there has been brewing up a profound shift; one that some astrologers link back to the eclipses of 2023, and are now more acutely active and will not reach its full or complete manifestation until the Spring of 2025…

This latest eclipse in Libra was a relational one, and this full moon or penilune contains within it, an emotional and intuitive complement; It has, as its emphasis on oneself and on one’s identity within or in contrast to our current or existing relationships… We can ask in a very earnest and inquiring way: Who am I ? Who am I with? What purpose does it serve? We ask ourselves: Is it Karmic? Cooperative? Evolutionary? Or is it a blend of these factors that forms the composite of our relational lives? How is it that we can cope, or how can we heal or best resolve these connections?

Here is an observation by April Elliot Kent, compiled from her long history in working with her astrology clients. She writes:

“Each Full Moon shines its light on things we haven’t been able to see before, and particularly on the inner, lunar landscape. During each Sun in Libra season, an Aries Full Moon highlights the ways in which we’ve been prioritizing ourselves; whether more or less than is healthy for our relationships with others.

And this particular Aries Full Moon (Oct. 17, 2024, 4:26 am PDT), [ is more than a Super Moon by its distance to earth- it is also a powerful alignment of energies and actions!] The Sun, Moon, and Mars are all tangled in a furious cardinal cross with Pluto, which is like being shoved out onto a moonlit battlefield with rockets bursting all around you.

This Aries Full Moon is part of a lunar phase family cycle that began with the dramatic Solar Eclipse of April 19, 2023, at 29º50′ Aries. It was the first Aries Solar Eclipse since 2015….  The Aries place in our birth charts was awakened by that eclipse, and ever since, we may have been struggling to figure out what to do with the spaces that opened up there. …

Last week, an intense solar storm sent the northern lights as far south as Alabama on the same day Hurricane Milton made landfall – the second hurricane to affect the southeast in two weeks. This week, the Sun squares prickly Mars on its way to a really volatile-looking Aries Full Moon. Folks are apt to be volatile, too. Things have been stressful. So, try to be nice to one another. … This Full Moon reveals some answers. Every important relationship is tested – with family, with your partner, with your boss, and most importantly, with yourself.”

Previous to this moon, we had a series of planetary shifts that have set the stage, and have led up to this full moon and potentially will emphasize its effects. They are noteworthy, and can have a lingering or long range impact on these soulful questions of identity and relationships, and what new directions become possible/probable for each of us…

Briefly, we had the shift of Jupiter into its retrograde movement in Gemini on the 9th. This retrograde will stay with us until 2/4/2025. There will be an expansive far-ranging discourse, however, the width of conversation happens without necessarily adding to its depth or its comprehension.

There will be proliferation of social media, and its double-minded ability to carry truth and deception, accuracy and skewed information. Its two-fold distractions and its insights will both be highlighted.

Next, we had the slow moving shift of Pluto moving forward in Capricorn; making its final days and months of living and moving through an earth sign and its more pragmatic priorities. PLuto, since 2008, has centered on questioning social and political structures, and asking us to look intently at the overall tearing down process before any necessary rebuilding can begin, and before its move or before its long awaited launch into the promised evolutionary steps of Aquarius.

Last among the ones I will cite, concerns the mental acuity of Mercury shifting into Scorpio on the 13th; leaving the more diplomatic and conciliatory tones of Libra, now calling for a more intense, direct, and a more power laden voice- that that requires definitive reactions and sharp responses as it travels through Scorpio.

With these dynamic factors actively in the background offering up both their tensions and challenges, their insights and optimism, we can begin to look at this full moon in Aries.

In my years of research in transpersonal psychology and allied closely to my work with others in developing and deepening their spiritual formation, the issue of vulnerability is often discussed.

It appears most often as a mistaken concept; one that is defensive or that has been defined/defied by feeling a sense of weakness, or where we have our most sensitive areas of experience in our lives.

Vulnerability can be quickly recognized as a place where we are most prone to insult and injury… However, the healing and/or evolutionary work that is necessary here begins with the universal human understanding that to be human, to be alive, is to risk being vulnerable. We are often pierced by the selfishness of others, by harsh economic realities, by challenges of health and illness, and other challenges inherent in our human existence. To be… is to be vulnerable!

The other admission necessary towards the development of emotional and spiritual progress – any soulful depth, compassion, maturity, that makes our own healing and understanding possible is this: We are all called to become “wounded healers.” Maybe not professionally, as therapists, clergy, or somatic workers, but certainly in our personal and intimate connections; in our relationships to family, friends, and partners…

In astrology, this place of deep hurt, injury, shame and guilt can be associated with the Moon and with Chiron. In accord with most astrological outlooks, the Moon stores our innermost memories and unconscious motives; we can hold our genetic and cross generational wounds here… And while Saturn speaks to us about our current life karma and its lessons, Chiron teaches us about what deeper issues/wounds have to be resolved by challenging our resistances, our estrangements, and offering up new directions where our awareness can grow and our souls can prosper.  (As students, we can look at the places where the Moon, Saturn, and Chiron occupy in your chart; look at the sign, the house, and any aspects…)

In my latest studies on what identifies and reveals our karmic relationships, there is a simple truth to be told; a simple truth to behold… That there are no ways known that allow us to completely avoid being involved in having a wide range of responses and personal reactions to one another! So relational karma will be unavoidable; such as in our families that are inborn or part of any family dynamic, and then there are all the complex social/cultural experiences that are situational and can profoundly affect us. Our own personal karma is also unavoidable; the experiences that can come from others; people we stumble on, accidentally meet, or especially those who we choose or freely elect… Basically, our lives experience many karmic patterns, and from the events and experiences of our lives there are a multitude of possibilities to discover; to avoid; to benefit from; to learn from; to enjoy! One has to live openly, and authentically. As the existential philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard put it, : [Life is to be lived fully forward, but it is best understood backward!]

Lastly, In this full moon report, I will introduce (if I have not before!) another planetary player that can act as an alchemist for our challenges, and can begin to work with the deeper issues, and can act as a solvent  or catalyst as we work through this life’s lessons. This is the planetoid Eris.

She conjoins the Moon, also square Mars- her symbolic brother! While Mars is like to create chaos in a more direct or obvious way, Eris fosters creative discontent; the dissatisfactions with our lives that can stir us to change; to shift our focus or our perceptions in a way that removes the burrs or prickly problems and through that relief process, we are moved, and maybe soothed, into a shift in our awareness.

Eris is less likely to agitate overtly or in some obvious way than Mars; but she certainly stirs the pot, and left unattended the issues that are neglected will boil over! Other possible ways to understand the effects of Eris might be the story of the oyster and the pearl; the coal and the diamond; or simply what irritates or pressures us can hide a valuable lesson in attachment, freedom, awareness and eventual transformation!

My speculation for this full moon would be how Eris acts to make us look at who in our life or who in our immediate surroundings might be manipulative; who might try to take advantage of your good or benevolent and unselfish nature… Then it will be up to you to forthrightly call that person on their behavior! The pot is stirred and there can be steam!  And if an awareness or an understanding can be reached that goes beyond any defensiveness, after some time and process, we can be grateful for what that situation or interaction had taught us!Celestial Blessings, Peter                                                            Astrologer/Theologian/Life Coach                                       .
