Can our world survive without gratefulness? Whatever the answer, one thing is certain: To say an unconditional yes to our mutual belonging of all beings will make this a more joyful world. This is the reason “yes” is my favorite synonym for God.”

Brother David Stendahl-Rast OSB, Ph.D.

“To be grateful for the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives – the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections – that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly grateful people when we can say thank you to all that has brought us to the present moment.… Let us not be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now, and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God.”

Gratitude: The Heart of The Christian Life

“…Our knowledge of God is perfected by gratitude. We are thankful and can rejoice in the experience of this truth: That God is Love… In the spiritual life, there is no such thing as indifference to love or hate. That is why tepidity (which seems to be indifference) is so detestable. It is hate disguised as love. A [man] who truly responds to the goodness of God cannot be ungrateful. [He] acknowledges all that [he] has received, and so cannot possibly be a health-heated Christian.”

Thomas Merton Thoughts in Solitude

Gratitude is an acknowledgment that something of value has been received, recognized, and appreciated. A person has no religion who has not slowly and painfully gathered one together, adding to it, and shaping it.
