Mercury Turns Retrograde
Wow! All this, and a lunar eclipse too! Without much exaggeration, this is a complex confluence of energies that, by their sheer number, are potentially meaningful and significant! The wide variety of energetic interplays and possibilities associated with this moon and her “bloody” eclipse could easily require a lengthy explanation, so I will attempt to outline the concise highlights for you!
Let’s begin our lead up to this moon and eclipse by outlining any planetary shifts and changes that come toward us before the eclipse, which happens early on Friday… While I have reported on the importance of the Mars retrograde in Cancer, and that there is the conjunction of Venus with Mercury in Aries on Tuesday. On Friday, Mercury retrograde begins, and these two planets will be traveling similar paths and be in a constant association, but not in relationship…yet, how we think and how we relate to others will be a frequent topic of concern and consideration…
However, the more important and lasting conjunction comes from the annual alignment of the Sun with Saturn, which becomes an active influence on Wednesday and will last throughout the eclipse period and into next week…
There are many descriptions of this conjunction… none of them pleasant, easy, freeing or light-hearted!
These two, in combination, act as the two masculine heavyweights contending and aligning with each other to provide people a variety of stresses and strains-from the political to the personal-with life assignments and karmic lessons. They can become a classroom on conscience, on perceived and on real limitations that have to be honestly faced, and on the struggles necessary to overcome personality blocks through perseverance and deep centering or balance.
Taking such an earnest inventory of one’s life so far is almost a mandatory step; this aspect requires greater self-knowledge that serves our need for deeper wisdom extracted from our experiences so we can learn to avoid the pitfalls and pratfalls of our past…
Lena from the Shamanic School offers us this overview: She writes:
… Known as the Blood Moon, this full moon is one of the most intense of the year. It accelerates whatever process of completing a particular chapter or cycle in your life you are engaged with. It is as if you are being cosmically pushed to the next level, ready or not! So do not take this time lightly, but do some serious work around what needs to happen in your life. Remember that you cannot fix another’s issues, however you can hold prayer and space for them to find their way.
This is an important time to focus on your well-being and what brings you a sense of security. It is also conducive to opening more deeply to your intuition and the wisdom of your heart. You “know” emotionally what is right. Some letting go may be required, so don’t resist.”
Another description comes to us from Kalia Kelmenson’s article in Spirituality and Practice magazine. This excerpt describes the meaning of a blood moon. She writes:
“The appearance of a blood moon has had spiritual meaning throughout history. The ancient Incans and Mesopotamians believed the blood moon was an omen, portending death and overthrow of the king. Some Native American tribes believe that a blood moon meant that the moon needed care. Islamic cultures view the phenomenon as a time for special prayers.
The blood moon took on a spiritual meaning more widely in 2013, as the blood moon prophecy was picked up by media channels and shared widely. Christian preachers interpreted a series of prophecies in the Bible that spoke of the end of days following a specific sequence of lunar and solar eclipses. As the term “blood moon” became widely known, it prompted intense interest and widespread examination of the phenomenon.
Clearly, the blood moon sparks curiosity and the imagination of many. “Blood moon” is a descriptive phrase for a total lunar eclipse that takes place during the full moon. The reddish color, though ominous, is simply a result of the scattering of sunlight through the earth’s atmosphere, similar to what happens during sunsets that appear red. …
An eclipsing of the brilliance of the moon allows for an exploration of the subconscious or hidden layers of our emotional and spiritual aspects. The spiritual meaning of the blood moon is the opening of the path to exploring what is often referred to as our darker side; emotions such as rage, shame, and grief. These emotions are not widely acknowledged in our culture, and yet they exist.
… Blood moons and their spiritual meaning are a reminder that there is immense power and intelligence that can be found in the shadows if we only have the courage to explore with discernment and free from judgment.”
Continuing with the astrological views of this eclipse and full moon, we are given research that informs us that this particular eclipse is a South Node eclipse. This particular eclipse pattern has not shown up since 2007.
In a brief recap, the South Node is the more karmic, hidden from memory or below our conscious awareness, and it carries over qualities and traits that ask us to identify them, befriend them, and release them to the degree that our process and understanding allows. It can be the time of decluttering, and making clear pathways in your heart and your home; It could be a time that might include “tough love” where your boundaries have to be honored, and those who have not respected yours are finally shown the door!
NOTE: IF you know your chart, please pay close attention to where the Virgo full moon falls in your chart… Consider what house it is in and the various aspects to the moon that are active during this time, and especially if your chart has 23–24 degrees occupied around the zodiac…
The last set of commentary on this full moon and eclipse comes from Simone Butler, who writes for the astrologer column, Mooncircles. Here are her thoughts, research and observations:
“As writer Anne Lamott put it in a recent blog, “We are hitting bottom, where there’s nothing left to do but to give in to what you can’t control. It’s time for trust and surrender. The letting go gives a taste of peace, long overdue, and that’s when the shift occurs, maybe not at first in the scary situation, but internally.”
Enter the total lunar eclipse at 23 Virgo (March 13, 11:55 p.m. PT). As a South Node eclipse, its task is to help us empty out the past and release who we used to be so we can become more aligned with our true selves. The Sun in Pisces is with Saturn, Neptune and the North Node, offering structural changes, culminations and karmic detours that we may not comprehend just yet, but will understand later. …
This is the first time in 17 years we’ve had a lunar eclipse in Virgo, and it will be the only eclipse visible in North and South America this year…. No matter how you toss it, the month of March has a chaotic, frenetic energy to it. Mercury turns retrograde the day after this eclipse, so any decisions you make now may have to be reconsidered or reaffirmed over the next three weeks. … Don’t get too attached to whatever’s going on, as it’s all in flux.”
Lastly, Stephanie Campos of Well & Good Newsletter adds this reminder of what practices are best during a Mercury retrograde. She writes:
“Roughly 24 hours later, Mercury retrograde begins. Now we have not one but two planets in reverse motion in Aries. It may feel like we’re getting into deep and direct touch with our fundamental values about love and relationships, but we’re still unsure of how to translate these realizations into words. Because Mercury will remain in reverse motion through April 7 and Venus will not station direct until April 12, we may have to wait a little while before it’s all clear. The usual rules about Mercury retrograde apply: back up your data, have extra chargers on hand, give yourself extra time to get to appointments and know that misunderstandings are likely.”
So please use this moon cycle to carefully observe, look more deeply, and assess what needs to be left behind to make room for the new… Remember to be gentle as well as honest with yourself and others…
