Sun & Moon at Zero degrees of Virgo

Saturn and Neptune and Pluto Quincunx

The ASC square Saturn and Neptune

Holy Quincunxes, Batman!

What is that aspect all about, anyway? It is also known as a Yod; and it has been regarded in some esoteric circles as “the finger of fate!”

While I may have spoken about its significance in other earlier posts, I am fully aware that unless you have been a student of astrology, this “minor” aspect might have easily escaped your notice and its importance was missed or neglected by a lack of information!

With a promise to explain, right now I am deferring to an appraisal of this significant new moon that lands on the earliest degree of Virgo and begins to infuse us with a more grounding, stabilizing effect that this earth sign often provides…

Lena, from the Shamanic school, leads off your appraisal and understanding of what this more complex new moon can offer us. In her overview, she writes:

“This New Moon is all about a restart, a fresh start, a blank canvas, and a huge opportunity for the reinvention of whatever needs it at this time. There is support for taking charge and being proactive with reorganization and reconfiguring what does not work or is not sustainable.

In addition to this being a very practical, organized and productive time, it is also an opportunity for an elevation in consciousness and a raising of vibration. To honor this, make sure you take some time for spiritual practices, intention setting and truth telling around what needs to change. Staying optimistic and positive is very helpful, as it imprints the quantum field with your best vision of the future.”

Another “cheer-leading” evaluation and encouragement comes from author and astrologer, April Elliot Kent. She writes:

This week offers the beginning of Virgo season and the first of two consecutive Virgo New Moons. (The other, a Solar Eclipse, awaits us at the other end of the Sun’s Virgo Season, on September 21.) … The message of Virgo is not that we have to do everything perfectly, but simply that we should do our best. It’s the sign of work, so if we’ve chosen a job that plays to our strengths, then it’s a matter of giving it our best effort. It’s the sign of service; are you giving to others as well as seeking gain for yourself? It’s the sign of health, and even if you’ve neglected your body in important ways over the years, it’s never too late to begin treating it with care. It’s the sign of our little animals; are their coats glossy, are they playful and happy? Bring love and care to your everyday life. Don’t worry about doing things perfectly. Just do your best.”

Ms. Kent continues to another thought for our consideration. She writes:

Virgo is a sign of adjustment and compromise, and its symbolism contains an essential truth: That having things exactly the way we want them all the time is not a reasonable goal, nor a healthy one, and it certainly won’t make us happy. Even alone, contentedly pursuing our Virgo objectives in a hermetic cocoon, we can’t be happy forever; humans are social creatures, and every now, and then we have to rub shoulders with our fellow man and adapt to the world as it is.” This shift from expressive Leo energies to a more docile yet focussed energy of Virgo can be a difficult transition, unless you are already a more cognitive and analytical type of person. If that is true, the Virgo season can be a time for you to express your talents and skills!

Remember to look for what house Virgo occupies, and for whatever planet is situated in Virgo or in that same house, as the keys to your greater understanding this new moon… and the full and new moon to follow!

Among astrologers, the general agreement is that the square holds the most potential for challenge and change; for tension and character development, and so we will start with an outline of what the squares from Saturn and Neptune hold for us as those planets are in Aries, and in a square aspect to the ASC which is 29 Gemini or close to the starting point of 0 of Cancer…(some astrologers refer to the zero degree of every sign as The Aries Point; or the beginning. I find that practice to be unnecessarily confusing; So IF you read about it, know that is what they are referring to…the zero degree…)

Squares to the ASC require our personal examination of their limiting effects; what tensions they provide, and how best to work with the challenges that are being presented to us. Needless to say, this is not a smooth transition, and it will have a further impact on the new moon at its inception or zero point in Virgo.

In this case, the Sun being square Uranus can bring some disruption into any carefully outlined plans or any expected responses from others. You can expect this unsteadiness or expression of spontaneity to be more likely on Saturday through Tuesday… Geminis and Virgos, both ruled by Mercury, can feel those mutable shifts and changes mentally and socially…

Now for the Quincunx! It is a rare event in any monthly forecast/overview that we would encounter and explain the minor aspects. Time, energy, influence often prohibits the detailed explanation of all the aspects one could list in any report!

However, this month is different because of how the alignments of the planets are in relation to this new moon, and how the clustering of planets around the first 2 degrees of a sign can create the aspect called an inconjunt or a Yod; or a Quincunx… they are all the same, but some astrologers chose one descriptive term over another! With tongue in cheek, and if you are of a certain age, you will also remember the comedic use of “the fickle finger of fate!” Well, the quincunx or Yod is the astrological event/aspect that most closely resembles that!

In April E Kent, in her synopsis, she says“…

In a quincunx aspect (roughly 150 degrees), planets are normally in signs that really have nothing in common. They’re not in the same or even compatible elements, nor the same modality.

In a quincunx, planets have to seek a compromise. Virgo is well-suited to adjustment, but its practicality, attention to detail, and focus on the here-and-now tend to chafe against Aries’ impulsiveness and Aquarius’ preoccupation with the future.

The Sun says that it’s Virgo’s time to shine, though, so don’t compromise so much that you lose track of the service and excellence that are so important at this New Moon. From time to time, we get a little bored with ourselves – tired of facing, each day, our same old quirks and hang-ups, the same face looking back at us in the mirror. [And we are presented with a time to adjust or change…]”

My concern runs towards a more serious and deeper appreciation of the quincunx… I am more likely to agree with traditional astrologers who see the Yod as a potential medical condition that comes to your attention after being latent or dormant, or it could pertain to a behavioral lifestyle obstacle that become prominent in your life, and both possible interpretations ask you to address it, confront it, resolve it as best you can!

Note:Other research points to a lesser affect- as an irritation or as an obstacle that needs to be seen clearly, and then worked on diligently to find a compromise or a workable solution…

So, in your investigations, look where 1 and 2 degrees of Aries are, knowing that the planets of Saturn and Neptune occupy them, Then look to the planet, Pluto in the early degree of Aquarius.

Briefly, Saturn would give us a sense of restriction and limitation; Neptune would warn against any indulgences, and illusions; Pluto will correspond to pressures, and how the larger society can compel you to act or respond…

Lastly, there is a wider and older branch of astrology that will include a description and subsequent discussion of how the fixed stars that surround the Zodiac might be influential or have some relevance to the larger approach to astrological understanding.

Currently, I am working on a personal interpretation of the individual degrees of the Zodiac, and I am, for historical and metaphysical purposes, including some of the fixed stars of the 1st and 2nd magnitude, and where they are located around the horoscope wheel.

I bring my latest book research up in this report (I also have another one in the works on definitions of the Spirit, and understanding spiritual experiences) because there is a consideration of one of the most powerful and influential of the fixed stars that can be included in this moon report.

It is known as Regulus, the Royal or King star, and it is one of the 4 most highly regard stars around the Zodiac and comes into play this weekend. Here is what researcher and astrologer, Lynn Hayes says about Regulus, and then I will follow with my own outlook and description. She writes:

“In addition, the lunation (Sun/Moon conjunction) is in tight alignment with the fixed star Regulus. Regulus was in the royal sign of Leo for 2000 years, and only recently (2011) moved into Virgo. (The fixed stars, being fixed, don’t actually move, but because of the precession of the equinoxes the apparent location of the stars will shift.)

For the 2160 years of Regulus in Leo, the role of kings and emperors was very different, than the decentralization of governments we have now under Regulus in Virgo, which is more modest and reticent of the spotlight. Rulers who fly under the radar and get things done behind the scenes is more apropos of Virgo.”

Classic texts add two minor stars are here, and I would blend any correlations into this 0 degree…

“[A desire to refine and define their energies in new ways; less raw and direct, and with more polish and an abiding sense of dignity and self-respect. Blends Leo and Virgo “as service with elegance.” Gracious leadership and a caring sense of command-brings out strong loyalties. The ideal of servant/leadership is “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” Blends humility with acknowledgement for the need for cooperation and upholding the value of each person. Delegation.

Genuine humility and not a false self-importance is the guidance here; no room for arrogance or false confidence or bluffing. Early life obstacles and barriers become the limits that teach us- and turn us into better advocates and teachers because of our compassion…

Next up in September… the full moon in Pisces…and the next eclipse!
