Full Moon in Pisces
September 7th, at 2:09 PM EDT
Total Lunar Eclipse
Sun at 23 Virgo; Moon at 23 Pisces
Sextile Jupiter; Square the Ascendant
Get ready for eclipse season! This weekend we are “treated” to a full lunar eclipse and all that it can bring to us emotionally and subconsciously, and later this month, on the 21st, we are given the Solar eclipse which awakens energies and actions that are both global and personal…
IF you are not ready …or IF you are tired of all the upsets and challenges you have had, and are eagerly looking for things to happen and situations to change…well, “c’est la vie!” or if you prefer, Sinatra’s “That’s Life…”
This eclipse time is reminding us that in order to deal with all the twists and turns of life, we will need to adopt and affirm a larger, philosophical or spiritual perspective…
One that embraces change and one that accepts some life challenges have to be endured, faced bravely, and realize the wisdom behind the saying, “A lesson/hardship/challenge remains with us until the wisdom and insights of that lesson are learned.”
Change and the portends of change usually associated with the Fall and school routines returning are only the surface of changes we can welcome at this time; With this first eclipse and then leading into the Autumnal Equinox, our balance and our perspectives will be shifting, and it would be best to find a way to welcome them and adapt your life in a way that benefits from those shifts and changes that eclipses often provide for our world and for our lives!
“The Times they are a-changing”, and September feels like that threshold moment – with one foot in the old world and one in the new, we’re invited to take stock of what’s worth carrying forward and what’s better left behind.
It is important to understand that eclipses bring with them challenges and possibilities, crises and opportunities, and much of how we can understand these energies and their priorities and effects on us has to do with the frame of mind and the openness of heart that we greet them with when they arrive!
There are planetary shifts to take notice of that span this week and could influence how we interpret and comprehend how the eclipse will work for us… The first is the backward motion of Saturn. That retrograde is what makes him re-enter Pisces, and stay in those last degrees until November…not to finally move forward and slowly arrive for his lengthy year stay in Aries… The second step back comes from Uranus; he is barely in Gemini now, but finds it “necessary” to go back into Taurus, for a last bit of shaking up the Taurean world!
A research group, Astrobutterfly, gives us valuable clues on how we can best benefit from this move backwards and how a re-visiting of issues and concerns could be, in the long run, beneficial. They write:
“There’s a bit more to the Saturn-in-Pisces story. Most of us don’t like to go back and revisit old territory – we just want to move on with our lives. But there’s gold in the integration process – when we pause to reflect, we gain a new perspective, and only then can the cycle truly complete. The good news? Later this month, Saturn begins to form a trine to Jupiter in Cancer. Even better, in October and November, we’ll see a beautiful Grand Water Trine between Saturn in Pisces, Jupiter in Cancer, and the planets moving through Scorpio. And this brings a rare opportunity for closure and emotional healing – a wave of support from the universe to help us close one chapter and welcome the next.”
Pay attention to your natal and progressed planets that reside around 0, 29, and by winter, 28 degrees of Pisces. Where those degrees reside, and the house it occupies, will be how you can comprehend Saturn’s teachings about the limits, structures, and obstacles, etc, you might be facing… The Uranus retreat comes at the end of this week…and because it is a very slow-moving planet, we will have an emphasis being placed on the 1st and the zero degree of Gemini, before finally slipping into Taurus, until 2026. So please look where those cusps and degrees land in your chart to better understand what shake-ups, changes, flashes of intuition, and bursts of knowledge, etc., might mean for you…
“What’s this work that Saturn in Pisces needs you to finish? Saturn wants us to become a stronger, more self-reliant, and better version of ourselves, and his sign gives the specific job description. Saturn’s back step into Pisces is a reminder that whatever we do, professionally or personally, it’s important that we bring a spirit of care, helpfulness, altruism. Our progress in these qualities is how Saturn will judge us. Expect a final exam that tests your capacity for kindness and sacrifice for the greater good.”
Another shift has our concerns and cautions revolve around the motions of Uranus, Astrobutterfly research group conveys to us about the meaning we can find. They write:
“On September 6th, 2025, Uranus – freshly ingressed into Gemini – turns retrograde at 1° of the sign. This station is a light bulb moment about where we are right now in this new Gemini reality, and where we might have rushed ahead or skipped steps in our eagerness to embrace change. At the time of the station, Uranus is tightly trining Pluto in Aquarius. There’s a sense of fatedness in the air, a feeling that the forces at work are bigger than us. And it’s the right kind of fatedness – we feel we’re in the right place at the right time. And even if the path forward is not entirely clear, there’s a quiet confidence that the universe is on our side, and that things will eventually work out.”
Not to neglect the forward shifts, this week Mercury enters into one of his favorite signs, Virgo. Mercury is very happy in Virgo because it allows for and encourages his logical and analytical qualities to be put on display! When Gemini and Mercury combine it encourages and allows for a wide variety of interests and current events, social concerns, and societal chatter; when Mercury is in Virgo there is very little of that! Virgo is a “no- nonsense” sign, and the qualities and abilities of Mercury become eagerly focussed on research, analysis, qualitative assessment, health and daily routines and taking a more rational and scientific approach to life!
Astrobutterfly’s commentary on Mercury and this ingress into Virgo is expressed in these words:
“In Virgo – the sign of both its domicile and exaltation – Mercury’s function is at its absolute peak. Here, Mercury can do what it does best, unhindered: the weather is perfect, there’s no traffic jams, so the messenger can reach every neighborhood on the route. Mercury will be clearing the Virgo eclipse path, delivering all the information you need – including those last-minute details or missing puzzle pieces – at lightning speed. The downside? When everything happens fast, there’s barely time to absorb the lessons. On the bright side, whatever has felt stagnant or sluggish in your life will suddenly get a huge burst of momentum.”
Now, on to the eclipse and its potential importance and meaning for us…
One useful and cogent summary comes from Leana of the Shamanic School. Here are her observations and insights:
“Known as the blood moon for its red hue during the eclipse, this full moon is a powerful gateway to clearing the path of old patterns and karmic debris. The time between the 2 eclipses (next one is a partial solar on September 21) is the most intense window of rattling the cage of our known structures, patterns, beliefs, attachments, and habitual ways of living. The energy is volatile and unpredictable, confusing or enlightening, painful or ecstatic. Hard truths could surface, and the foundations of something you either believed in or counted on for stability could show signs of fragmenting.
Think of this full moon time as a giant clean out, much like a flash flood, immensely powerful in its ability to scour out the dead wood and accumulated debris. It is best not to resist but to work with whatever is coming up proactively, making wise choices, setting new boundaries, and being responsible for organizing the flow of energy in ways that serve you better.”
Some basic facts in our approach to this eclipse can be first understood descriptively:
It is a total eclipse; that is, it becomes dark completely to the naked eye, and is the most powerful or the most intense kind of eclipse. Unfortunately, for we who live in the USA, it will NOT be visible, but that does not mean that it will not be influential, even transformative for you!
A blood moon only occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when the moon angles behind the Earth in such a way that the Earth blocks much of the sun’s light. What’s left passes through Earth’s atmosphere on its way to the moon, which filters out the blue light. That leaves only the sun’s red light to hit the moon and reflect to Earth, giving it a reddish glow.
It occurs at 15 degrees of Pisces, as the Sun occupies 15 degrees of Virgo; as astrology students know, that it can also be felt or experienced at its Square or Axial points, at 15 degrees of Gemini and 15 of Sagittarius.
So look at your charts for where this 15th degree lands, its house, and particularly IF there is a planet within 1 degree of it! Because this is a lunar eclipse, and that it is a North Node eclipse, the emphasis has to be on the Moon, on Pisces, and on the qualities of the North Node.
We know, from our studies, that the Moon speaks to us as our feelings, as well as our emotions ( they are different!), and it displays or uncovers messages from our unconscious and most intimate or deep needs and drives. So this eclipse is very personal. It goes to the core of who we are and what parts of us are in need of serious attention; what needs healing, resolution, compassion, and understanding. Pisces, being the most spiritual and ethereal, metaphysical of the signs, gives us a “dotted line” between reality and fantasy. More positively, it provides us with a window into our souls- a look at our emotional and spiritual well-being. We could begin a spiritual or religious journey, or a new practice to deepen our faith and open ourselves to magic, mysticism, and mysteries that will inspire us!
Pisces can involve us in energy work, meditation, and especially dreams. Negatively, it will ask us to pay serious attention to any habit patterns, even addictions and attachments that our egos declare that we need! However, with the emphasis on the North Node, we can also realize an inner strength,
a firm resolve, and a determination to free ourselves of any tendencies or patterns that have held us back or kept us down… A description of the need to balance the pressures of Virgo with the promises of Pisces comes to us from Astrobutterfly’s description of this eclipse. They write:
We are in the Virgo season, so our focus naturally turns to everyday reality: work, errands, routines, the small rituals that give us a sense of safety and control. However, the more pressure we face in daily life – work, duties, responsibilities (Virgo) – the more the psyche leans the other way, into an alternate field where “perfection” is not set by worldly standards but by the hidden drives and unmet desires of the soul (Pisces). Pisces is where our higher self tries to connect with us through symbols and signs: a dream you can’t shake, a chance encounter that rings like a bell, a longing you can’t translate into ordinary life. … Our inner life is deeper and more complex, and retreating into Pisces offers an oasis of the soul. However, that oasis can also turn into an escape – just like Virgoan works and rituals harden into dry routines – when we push too far into either extreme. … The task is not to chase the mirage of perfection on either side. The invitation is to build a bridge – to let the part of us that speaks in symbols and tides (Pisces) be in direct conversation with the part that schedules, crafts, and implements (Virgo). At the Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, don’t dismiss seemingly unrelated inputs. If an image or idea keeps knocking, keep looking at it. … Listen for the underlying message that runs through a weird dream, an overheard phrase, a random headline, or a chance encounter. When those threads repeat, you’re being guided toward the next piece of your story. At this North Node Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, trust the dream enough to follow its thread, and trust yourself enough to let the life you live in secret spill over into the one you live.
