The New Moon in Libra

October 21st, 2025, at 8:25 AM EDT

Sun/Moon at 28 degrees of Libra         Square to Jupiter and Pluto, Quincunx Saturn; Opposing Chiron & Eris

We are all familiar with the description of Libra being the sign of balance, harmony and peace; however, I fear that there is very little that is truly diplomatic and harmonious that could be felt or experienced during this particular new moon!

If I had to choose a theme, it would be “awaiting change, engineering into transition.” The scales have been tipped; we are not going to be able to indulge any reticence or allow for our tendencies to languish in indecision-now it is the time to begin our rebalancing or coming back to homeostasis; to equity; equality and a greater sense of justice and equilibrium. Transition can be intimidating; they can carry with them newly required choices that leave some patterns, habits, people behind…

Due to the contrasting energies, we have to guard ourselves against projecting our issues and problems on others; concerning personal growth and health, relationships are best used as mirrors; but this month, they can appear “fogged up!”

So, given the sharp and contracting energies in our world, I will ask: What one thing could you do or what one thing cold you release or let go to begin to rebalance your life, and then ask yourself how would you share it with others? What action, strategy, outlook or commitment could you make that would work to ensure a rebalancing, a reordering, and that could promote more harmony in your life?

A further explanation of this more introspective and some would say, provocative moon comes to us from astrologer and author, April Elliot Kent. Here are her observations about this new moon:

“This week’s Libra New Moon (Oct. 21, 5:25 am PDT, at 28º21′ Libra) is square Pluto. So it’s about relationships – Libra – but not the pink, fluffy, Hallmark card version of relating. It’s about the ways our connections with other people force us to unearth the parts of ourselves that are hurt, maybe where we feel insignificant or shamed. But while other people can trigger these feelings, when it comes right down to it, we’re the only ones who can heal them.

It begins with being truthful – not just with others, but with ourselves. Why did we make a particular choice? Sometimes, we’re tempted to make up a story about it, to avoid telling someone else the real truth. And that’s a personal decision. Just don’t fall into the trap of believing the story yourself. Always let your internal dialogue be scrupulously honest.

It’s a Libra New Moon, but it’s also the week when the Sun enters its dark, shadowy Scorpio season (Oct. 22, 8:50 pm PDT), on the same day Neptune retreats to Pisces, the sign of healing but also of the ways we avoid pain. In this case, the healing has to be earned, by confronting what hurts and deciding what gets to stay in our lives, and what needs to go.”

“As a long-lasting prelude to this new moon, we have planets changing direction and also re-entering previous signs. Before we go on to discuss all the possibilities that could arise from this potential turmoil, and hold the keys that unlock our understanding of our tests and challenges from it, we need to spend some time-assessing and not stressing-over the actions of Pluto, that has turned direct at 1 degree of Aquarius-where it will remain until early 2026.

Here is an excellent summary from Astrobutterfly research group on how to deal with this powerful message and its consequences. They write:

“Whenever Pluto – or any outer planet – changes direction, its energy is amplified

With Mercury, Venus, or Mars retrogrades, we focus on the actual retrograde period – the weeks when those planets are moving backwards. But with the outer planets, it’s not the retrograde itself that matters. Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus spend almost half the year in retrograde motion!

Instead, what matters with the outer planets is the shift – the moment when the planet changes direction. Whether the outer planet shifts from direct to retrograde, or – like now – when Pluto shifts from retrograde to direct, this is when we feel the jolt.

We recently had a Uranus station in early September, and that period was saturated with Uranian events and unexpected shake-ups. Back in July 2025, Neptune changed direction, and the world saw a wave of humanitarian crises and collective developments.

Now it’s Pluto’s turn to storm the waters.  Pluto doesn’t always have the best reputation, to put it mildly. Most people – even those who use words like “transformation” – still fear or avoid Pluto. Say “Pluto” and you start thinking of death, loss, or endings. But it’s not Pluto that brings the struggle.

It’s our resistance to Pluto that does that…

When stationary, Pluto says: I’m here. Tune into my frequency. And if we say “no thanks,” just like any signal we try to ignore, it gets stronger and more insistent.  The less we tune in, the louder Pluto gets – like a siren that won’t turn off, growing until it’s eventually unbearable. So what should we do instead?

When Pluto comes, we DO Pluto. We don’t run away from Pluto – we meet it.

This might mean paying attention and engaging with those things that would otherwise scare us. Let’s take the fear of death, which is the fundamental fear. Instead of brushing it off, changing the subject, or turning the TV up louder, we want to ask: what are we really afraid of?

If we find ourselves avoiding difficult topics or uncomfortable feelings, there’s often an emotional truth we don’t want – or don’t feel ready – to process. A deeper truth we fear fully embracing, even when the signs are there.

Pluto wants us to address what is otherwise bothering us.
If it’s the fear of losing a job, for example, it’s really about survival: how will we pay the mortgage, how will we take care of our children? All these scenarios sound overwhelming – we don’t want to think of them because of how they make us feel.

But actually thinking about them – doing so earlier on, when there’s no obvious threat – is better. It gives us options… All this – facing what we’d rather avoid – makes us more resilient, which is what Pluto really wants. Pluto doesn’t want us to be stronger just for the sake of being “powerful,” but resilient for the sake of being agile. The cockroach is millions of years old. Dinosaurs didn’t make it.  Because, as Darwin put it, “the species that survives in the long run is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

When we have options, when we think ahead, life is less of a threat. And when the anxiety of everyday survival recedes, we have the space to discover our real self, real purpose, and live more authentically – aligned with our unique potential.

And that’s really the true, core Pluto motivation.”

Using these insightful guidelines, we will better cope with and comprehend what the new moon could hold for us in the way of teachings, and strivings, and understandings…”

Neptune returns to Pisces the day after the new moon, but we can experience its influences a day or two earlier… Having put her toes into Aries and feeling energized by that quick cold dip, and while those glimpses can appear harsh, they are more directly connected to wards reaching the ideals that were fostered by the Piscean years, she retreats And returns to her familiar more waters of Pisces, where she will stay until late January 2026. Needless to say, Neptune prefers the illusionary and the inspirational, the deep and often uncertain feeling associated with Pisces’s more gentle and subtle watery environment.

We have to be careful not to label this a retreat, but a time for reassessment of the whole length and breath of the 14 years of Neptunian times in Pisces, and how best to strip away the extraneous layers and find the core or the essence of our lives. Once the barnacles of beliefs and that flotsam are released, the core of the inspirational teachings will be made ready for more direct, energetic Arian actions next Spring! Another way to express this potential is that you will be able to hold magic in your hands once you clear the dust and dirt of false beliefs and allow your vision and your ideals to shine!

On to the new moon!

Admittedly, a less harmonious moon, and one of the ways we can appraise or comprehend it best is by its place in the month; This new moon happened near the end of Libra; in fact, only 3 hours after this new moon connects or completes the conjunction, the moon moves quickly into Scorpio! By this quick movement, we can also say that we are moving into the “dark” of the year; into a need to reconcile deeper emotions and attitudes. All that Mercury and Mars in Scorpio consider to be targets of concern and areas for concentrated, focussed discussion or resolution!

Lena, of the Shamanic School, give us her impression of the value of moving through our issues and obstacles. Rather than feel frustrated by the imbalances we feel, the tilting of the scales indicate where our attention can flow so that we move through our resistance to achieve wisdom from our experiences and more compassion for our selves. She writes:

“This moon promises inspiration for something new, as well as potentially bringing a challenging aspect of disharmony and imbalance. Since it is an active time, responsibilities can feel burdensome and prone to stress. Use the support of this New Moon to revisit what would bring more balance and harmony into your life and take some action towards your insights. Finding balance means bringing yourself back from worry, anxiety and judgment about the past or the future and being more in the present moment. Doing something that will raise your vibrations is also helpful during this time.
There is some unpredictability to this New Moon energy, and you may need to pay attention to the possibilities. It is important to stay grounded so when the unexpected happens you can flow with it instead of resisting. Look for the opportunity instead of resisting the change. How can change benefit you right now? The unpredictable aspect could also bring unexpected healing to an issue, where the end result is you reclaiming your power.”

Another viewpoint, a little more political and expansive, comes to us from Simone Butler, an experienced astrologer who writes for Moon circles newsletter. She observes and outline these ideas and outlooks:

“Soon we’ll all experience the Libra New Moon (Oct. 21, 5:25 a.m. PT.) This lunation falls at the end of the sign (at 28 degrees), giving it a decisive quality, and emphasizing the air sign abilities of decision-making and brokering agreements. This is impacted by an exact conjunction of Mercury and Mars at 20 Scorpio at the New Moon – a potentially quarrelsome aspect, but also one of intense scrutiny and the ability to solve problems.

This conjunction is not a one-time thing; it returns on Nov. 12 due to Mercury’s retrograde in Sagittarius and Scorpio through most of November. On the world stage and in your personal life, expect heated, passionate thoughts and exchanges that take time to unfold or reach a conclusion. It will be interesting to witness the ripple effect of Machado’s Nobel recognition, both in her country and abroad.

Venus, which rules this New Moon, just migrated into its own sign of Libra on Oct. 13. This amplifies the themes of fairness, balance and justice through early November. Venus in Libra is often a good time for relationships, creativity and important connections. Venus in its home sign particularly seeks justice and fair dealings. It’s time to hold yourself and others accountable for doing what’s right. …”
