The New Moon and The Solstice

The New Moon in Sagittarius

    December 19th, 2025 at 8:43 PM EST

Sun & Moon at 28 Degrees

Square Saturn & Neptune; Quincunx Uranus

Welcome to the Solstice season! THe new moon in Sagittarius comes to us close to the Solstice and along with Mars entering Capricorn earlier this week, their influences on self and society are both troubling in one view, and promising in another perspective!

It reminds me of the old Rabbinic story about the mother who frets too much; She constantly worries about her two sons and their business. One son sells sunglasses and the other son sells umbrellas… Poor mother! She is always worried about the weather, and fears that her sons will not be able to provide for her…not realizing she has it made!

From my viewpoint, this new moon will act in a more subdued way than what would usually be expected from any Sagittarius influences due to the Saturnian influences. Normally, or most often, Sag has an expansive energy and a willingness to chase and to know ideas; to travel, or extend themselves into our world following their ideals or the concepts of the higher mind such as law, religion, international relations etc., but this time, this season it will be less dramatic and more poignant and pensive.

Here a synopsis of what potentials this new moon and its closeness to the Solstice could bring by Dorje Kristen of Heart Astrology. She considers these possibilities:

“It may also suggest that you, too, can accomplish meaningful and difficult things over the next five days, as the Sun moves toward a conjunction with Mars in Capricorn. This is a powerful window for making real strides and breaking through areas where you have felt stuck on a personal level.                                                                                   At the same time, it is a period that carries risk on a mundane and international level, as Mars in Capricorn can express itself in a highly martial and conflict‑oriented way. Keep an eye on developments in the news, as current events are often reflected by the movements of the planets above.”

When we include the hard or harsher qualities of the square aspects to Saturn and Neptune, we bring into question issues around what to trust and where is the truth? If you consult the Media, we are constantly being given choices about what we could/would/should believe! Not so much this time, however, this new moon has to contend with squares from Saturn and Neptune, and a quincunx from Uranus that would dampen any amount of enthusiasm and could make the Sag spirit more pensive and more introspective.

This many horned dilemma is heightened by the “gifts” of Neptune in a square aspect that can promote illusion and deception during this new moon phase that carries into the Solstice time…  Your task during this time up to the Solstice, is to separate appearances from realities, whether they are delicious or distasteful!

So the advice in reducing the less desirable Neptunian influences that life and the Media provides  is that I would lean into would be cautious appraisal about what actions to take and to be sure “ to test the waters” before diving into any actions or relationships! Later, next year, we can enjoy returning those “gifts” of Neptune and cashing in on the beneficial qualities of inspiration and intuition as we employ them knowingly in our preparation for what 2026 can bring…

Read what April Elliot Kent has to say about this moon cycle, and the planetary aspects that arrive close and just after the new moon’s appearance.. She writes:

“At the winter solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun enters Capricorn (Dec. 21, 2025, 7:03 am PST, through Jan. 19, 2026) and reaches its lowest point in the midday sky. Energy and spirits can be low. We’re headed for the finish line, and as we look back over the calendar year, we may be tempted to chastise ourselves for what we haven’t accomplished.

At the Capricorn solstice, there’s no place to go but up. Over the coming months, the Sun will begin its gradual ascent, eventually reaching its highest point at the summer solstice.

“At the Winter Solstice, the Sun enters Capricorn and its lowest point in the midday sky. The calendar year is almost finished, and we begin to plot our resolutions for the new one that lies ahead. But at the Sagittarius New Moon (Dec. 19, 2025, 5:43 pm PST, 28º24’ Sagittarius), we’re not yet ready for resolutions; we’re still exploring possibilities. We stand beside a frozen lake in the flat, white winter light, wearing a scarf knitted for us by some tender, Cancerian sort of person, pondering questions big and small. What happens after we die? What happens if we forget to live? Overhead, a few straggling winter birds fly in formation; we wonder where they’ll end up, and whether it might be worth following them on their journey.”

… But when you don’t have your usual bag of tricks to fall back on, when the construction of who you are and what you are doesn’t fit with your surroundings, you have the unique opportunity to figure out who you are without those constructions. Turns out, the real you has little to do with those things.

Venus in Sagittarius squares Saturn in Pisces this week (Dec. 20, 2025, at 9:09 pm PST, 25º37’ Sagittarius-Pisces). It’s not the jolliest combination of planets. … Venus in aspect to Saturn often brings delays or disappointments. But sometimes, the lesson is to have patience – and in the case of Saturn in Pisces, acceptance. Maybe the thing you wanted to do gets cancelled so you can do something different – and more enjoyable – later on. And you might just enjoy it more because you had to wait for it.

… I think many of us are feeling the need for some light at this Solstice. Things have felt pretty dark for a while, and it’s really nice to be reminded that everything is part of a cycle, and that the light is on its way back.”

Rather than re-tell the astronomy of the Solstice or repeat its traditional meanings (Last year, I reprinted my sermon on the Sun, The Soul, and The Solstice for you… I have found another, more metaphysical one that I will be reprinted on the 21st for my subscribers) I want to include  a more provocative viewpoint on the energies associated with the Solstice; the shifts in the Sun’s path could have an impact on your feelings and your physical health. Here is an excerpt from an article on the Solstice by Alex Myles who outlines some of the physiological possibilities associated with the Solstice and the change of energies that the Solstice could bring.. He writes:

“In the days leading up to the solstice, and the window immediately after, your entire system starts to require more silence and less external stimulation. … While the external world often demands constant movement and endless productivity, the stars themselves ask for a profound and sacred stillness deep within the soul. This celestial event truly represents the oldest New Year, a sacred threshold between the breath out and the breath in for all living things on Earth.

For six months leading up to December, the sun has been gradually growing weaker and the days progressively shorter. On the solstice, the sun appears to “stand still” (derived from the Latin meaning of solstice) before it is metaphorically born again, initiating a new cycle of light. This dramatic return of the light was the most critical event for our ancestors’ survival and spiritual understanding. They didn’t perceive it as merely a change in weather patterns; they deeply felt it as the sun triumphantly winning its eternal battle against the encroaching dark.

… This year, the potent alignment with the New Moon makes the skies even darker, pulling the veil of night even tighter around the entire world. This double dose of shadows creates a rare and exceptionally potent void, stripping away all external light to forcefully usher in a total return to the interior self. When the moon mysteriously vanishes alongside the sun, the Universe offers a complete and profound reset. It is a moment of pure, unfiltered potential where the lack of light truly serves as a blank canvas for your deepest intentions and most cherished dreams.

This period is the undeniable height of the dreaming phase, where we are encouraged to listen intently to the subtle whispers of our intuition. …

The solstice represents the Still Point, a sacred place where the incessant hustle of the ego gently dissolves into the wisdom of the spirit. Ancient wisdom suggests that during these days, time itself stretches and becomes elastic, allowing for deep cellular repair and visionary insight to emerge effortlessly. …

Just as a seed requires the cold and crushing weight of soil to crack its protective shell and begin new life, your spirit requires deep withdrawal to prepare for a brand new cycle of growth and expansion. Spiritually, this is the time of the ‘vacuum’ where we consciously release the old and stagnant to make ample room for the new and vibrant. By clearing your schedule and calming your mind, you create the magnetic space necessary for new miracles to enter your life in the coming months with ease.

This is also the absolute best moment to bravely face what you usually avoid, as the comforting darkness provides a symbolic cloak of safety to courageously look at your fears and ultimately transform them into pure, unadulterated power.

You feel tired because your biology and your spirit are intrinsically aligning with the deep, ancient rhythms of the natural world. The earth is dormant, resting deeply, and every single cell in your system instinctively wants to mimic this necessary and profoundly restorative hibernation.

Resistance to this essential rest creates a specific type of exhaustion that simply cannot be cured by mere caffeine or forced willpower alone. You are inadvertently fighting the gravitational pull of the Universe when you try to maintain your normal, frantic pace during this sacred window of time…. This profound fatigue is a physical manifestation of a spiritual upgrade occurring deep within your nervous system. …  Accepting this profound fatigue is an act of rebellion against a frantic world that perpetually undervalues the immense power of the pause.

When you choose sleep with intention, you choose repair at a deep level that reaches far beyond surface rest and mental relief. Your system uses this time to reset internal processes, restore balance, and activate wisdom that has been carried through generations. … This rest prepares you for the months ahead by restoring what constant motion and pressure have worn down. It creates space for clarity, resilience, and forward movement to return in a natural way.

This pause exists for a reason within a larger cycle that repeats again and again.      You are aligned with it and participating in renewal exactly as intended.”
