The Full Moon in Cancer January 3, 2026 at 9:03 AM EST        Moon at 13 degrees; Sun at 123 of Capricorn         Moon opposes Sun, Mercury, and Venus

Capricorn energies anyone? Welcome to the full dose of Capricornian energies, activities, and possibilities! For most of the month, we will be receiving concentration of earthly energies and the structured possibilities that Capricorn provides… Not necessarily dour or sober or humdrum as critics of this earthly sign might declare, but the ability to create healthy and positive boundaries, structures, plans, and strategies for your life in this coming year!

As you well know, the ruler of Capricorn is Saturn…the ruler or the authority figures who is marching with all deliberation from his awkward place in Pisces across the cusp divide into setting up shop in Aries for the next few years! He was never particularly happy living in Pisces that always resisted his more stoic desire for structure and limits; now, as he pushes himself into Aries, there are new forces at work- not of limitations per se, but ones of expression that will focus on how to use and employ Arian energies in ways of that will result in accomplishment and in authority that has a solidarity to it so that the “rules” are created in a lasting way…

Saturn does not move alone, he is accompanied in a short amount of time by Neptune, which provides alternative and more altruistic energies… However, when we look at the chart for this full moon, we can readily see that the Sun has plenty of company that is already situated in Capricorn.

Mars had already arrived, and the Sun would fast catch up to him and form a powerful conjunction. Then Venus proceeds into a similar alignment, and  we have the swift Mercury speedily moving through Capricorn too!

Sun, Mars, and Venus will all have their importance and could influence the meaning of this moon… Not to neglect the other ingresses, but on this New Year’s Day, Mercury enters Capricorn. Here is what astrologer Lynn Hayes the influence that will now begin to appear. She writes:

Mercury enters Capricorn January 1. Mercury presides over communication and the transmission of information, but also infuses our thinking with the energies of the sign through which it travels. In Capricorn, the sign of goals, accomplishment and leadership, we become more purpose-driven and more concerned with practical matters. As part of the Capricorn stellium, this helps us to think more clearly and bring the imagination and inspiration of the Saturn/Neptune/Uranus awakening down to earth.”

On to the moon herself…

The primary lesson or message of this fulk moon has to be with an assessment of realism versus fantasy and desires. It’s obvious to students of astrology that Venus and Mars will almost always pertain to relationships…The moon, particularly when she is in Cancer, holds many insights and clues to our deep needs and desires and to our unconscious motives that will want to express themselves.

Astrologer and writer, April Elliot Kent has this observation about the emotions and attitudes that could be displayed during this full moon cycle. She writes:

“At this Cancer Full Moon, the Moon’s instinct for care and emotional truth is challenged by a rare triple conjunction of the Sun, Mars, and Venus in Capricorn. Across the sky, the Moon in nurturing Cancer stands opposite this concentrated Capricorn energy—asking us to hold tenderness and resolve, vulnerability and strength, at the same time.”

What is cautionary about this moon, is the dynamics around it from the Sun (and for some astrologers who have a wider orb, with more distant Jupiter), that implores us to examine if our wants, needs, and desires are truly genuine or if their origins are subjectively and culturally trained. Those more commercial expectations and media driven goals might encourage our desires and manufacture our needs without presenting either the care or the consequences they hold within them!

If they are genuine, are they ethical, responsible and just? As the Dalai Lama once proclaimed to his students: [“Sometimes, not getting what you want can be an enormous stroke of luck!”]

The research group, Astrobutterfly, gives us  more insight and guidance for how best to deal with these energies and impulses: They write:

“With that awareness, we might be offered something even more relevant, more supportive, or better aligned with where we truly are. The Moon and Jupiter feel at home in Cancer…. This is nurturing, protective, life-affirming energy.

One of the best Full Moons of the year may arrive with opportunities we didn’t see coming – because they don’t look like what we thought we wanted, but are nonetheless exactly what we need. Pay attention to whatever surfaces around this Full Moon, because it will inform you what’s worth building on in the year ahead.

This Full Moon is still not the best time to set intentions or make concrete resolutions – that sweet spot comes later this month – but it IS an important moment to figure out where to direct your energy next.”

In some astrological circles, there is the concept of cazimi, exactness of a conjunction with the sun that could block or negate itsenergies… In my experience, I am more likely to see this close connection as an increase or as an amplification of the energies- in this case, the energies of Venus, and in a short time later, of Mars.

Given that this moon is in Cancer, we have to consider carefully the emotions that are being amplified or increased in opposition or in tension with the Sun, Venus and Mars. As generally understood, Cancer can be a fearful attitude or at least a place where the moon is very sensitive and reactive to any test or challenge she might face! As a consequence, there would be a protective, retreating response to a variety of issues that could be interpreted as threatening to their sense of safety and security. The positive steps here are found in a more careful awareness and in the more objective understanding of what has been said or done or experienced, and how best to negotiate it and understand it more fully…

Writing in the newsletter, Mooncircles, Simione Butler quotes astrologer Arielle Guttman on her conclusions concerning this full moon and the Sun’s conjunctions in these words:

“Mars and Venus are classically known as the hot lovers of the zodiac, igniting passion whenever they cross paths. Add the Sun to the mix, and the fire burns brighter still. The question becomes: what, exactly, are we burning for?”

Good question! For clues, look to the houses of your chart where 12 – 14 degrees of Cancer and Capricorn fall. Guttman adds, “Somewhere between assertion and attraction lies the alchemy we’re being asked to find—the precise balance that satisfies both desire and diplomacy. This rare triple conjunction at the start of the year suggests a powerful investment of energy into our goals and long-term projects.”

“When the Moon illuminates Cancer’s realm of feeling, let our hearts remain open. Let them teach us, soften us, and draw us closer to one another. In holding both fear and care—both tenderness and resolve—we awaken the heart that knows how to belong, how to endure, and how to love.”

In the first ten days of this year, we will have Venus conjunct the Sun on the 6th, conjoin Mars on the 8th, then the Sun connects to Mars on the 9th- all in the middle degrees of Capricorn! Not to be outdone by the power of the conjunction, we have Venus, Mars, and the Sun in opposition to Jupiter on the 9th and 10th!

The resource website, Astrodenist, gives us a tense description of this action in these words:                                                                                                                            “This energetic constellation injects dynamism into your relationships and is an excellent time for creative or artistic work. At the same time, it kindles desires and needs. The temptation to want too much – in projects, spending or expectations – is strong. Use the invigorating momentum, yet be wary of excess. Good planning, clear agreements and realistic budgets are worth their weight in gold now.”

Let’s continue to examine the many facets of these planetary connections as they are soon active once we move past the full moon…

As we move beyond the full moon, we encounter a rare triple conjunction of the Sun, Venus, and Mars. Extending the metaphor of making new resolutions for New years, and what directions for 2026 might be most beneficial for us, it is examining and accepting that the capricorn influence on these planets will surely affect how they will manifest or or how they could influence us.

Remembering that Capricorn is more Stoic; more reserved and less at home or familiar with his feelings, this triple conjunction will bring certain challenges to anyone who has planets between 12 and 16 degrees, and will present an overall test to how best to understand one’s feelings and to direct them in a grounded and responsible way.

The wider span of this more critical energetic time is from January 6th to the 10th; or from 12 degrees to 20 degrees that allows for the exact conjunction and a few days afterward. We can expect that the archetypes of parenting- Mother and Father issues might be highlighted as well as any clashes with authority, rules, and legal expectations. Additionally, we could have heightened governmental tensions and actions that could be dramatic, too! Many of these actions and issues will percolate throughout this month, and when these planets move into Aquarius during the next moon cycle…
