The Full Moon in Libra

Sun at 12 Aries; Moon at 12 Libra; Moon Quincunx Mercury;

Sun trine BML; Moon Sextile BML; Sun and Moon Square Jupiter

Welcome to this first full moon of the year… the full moon of the Cardinal signs of Aries and Libra! While it lands on April 1st, Aries is “nobody’s fool”, and Libra is too polite for practical jokes!

As a short review, this polarity or opposition is known as the Self vs.Others in its emphasis and orientation… Aries is the most self-directed, self-concerned sign, and maybe rightly so! After all, its fiery energy creates the Zodiacal year, and it initiates change, discovery, risk, and adventure as its nature or as its central approach to life!

In contrast, the gentility of Libra expresses herself in concern for others; for the quality of relationships, and for the balancing of the scales of justice, fairness, and I would add, kindness.

As one of the more refined, artistic, and socially conscious of the signs, Libra seeks to understand society and its prevailing social norms while expressing her hopes for equality and equipoise. She seeks to support balance and homeostasis, and how she attempts to relate and solve issues and problems she might face.

People born with or within this full moon will find themselves struggling to support any selfish aspirations and incentives they might have; theirs is an equally urgent desire for peaceful solutions, diplomacy, tact, and a more gentle, caring, and daily routine within a socially condoned way of living…

Given that the next report in April focuses on Aries energy– Mars coming into Aries, with Mercury not far behind, and the Arian stellium and the new moon, there will be possibilities and potentials of direct actions, whims and impulses, and such an emphasis can set the stage for other more militant and forceful ways that will need our diligence and restraint.

So today I will focus more on the Libran qualities and talk more about the 7th house, which is her native/natural domain…

Venus is the ruler or the primary influence on the 7th house…where Libra is situated in the Zodiac. The traditional definitions of what subjects or activities and what is of primary importance in the 7th house would be relationships; all that is “other than me” and so includes partnerships (legal, business, and contractual … and of course, it historically has ruled marriage in general, and specifically the 1st marriage…

(all the marriages or their potentials show up in your chart! These include “pal-imonies of any significant length, not just arrangements or romances which are located in the 5th house!)

Astrologers that I have read, and rules of rulership that I have seen imposed or accepted, will place friendships in the 11th house, along with hopes and wishes, associations and clubs etc., and fraternal / sorority groups, etc.

In this matter, I agree with April Elliot Kent, who has seen, through her many years and numerous consultations, that when it comes to truly close friends, they belong in the 7th house, similar to the care and commitment of marriage!

In that regard, when people speak of having a “soul friend” or a spiritual friendship, or a heart to heart connection with someone not their spouse, it would be a 7th house question or location…

Now on to the full moon…

Let’s begin with the summary by Lena, of the Shamanic School… She often provides us with an insightful overview of the moon’s energies and emphasis, as to what we can look forward to during this month and during this moon period… She writes:

“Known as the Pink Moon, it launches a new month, a new cycle, and a new energy; fiery, action-oriented, future-focused, adventurous, and inspired to move forward and take a leap towards what you have always dreamed of. …

There is an expansive side to this moon that will illuminate anything that needs your attention, as well as showing you clearly what your opportunities are. It is a powerful moon that encourages us also to seek balance between doing and being, the self and others, action and contemplation, alone time and social time.

Watch impatience and stay aware of what is being illuminated for your personal attention. This can be a powerful time of permanent release as well as a very supportive time for increasing your abundance and expanding your vision of what is possible.”

Simone Butler, writing in the Mooncircles newsletter, makes these additional observations about what emotional and relational priorities we can have during this full moon. She writes:

[There is a relational teaching that the West needs to heed…maybe more than ever before… It comes from the ancient African wisdom called ubuntu, often translated as “I am because we are.”

In other words, no one can win when others lose.  If I undermine your humanity, I do the same to myself. It’s similar to what Buddhists call interbeing. Practicing ubuntu cuts through the illusion of separate selves to reveal the fact that we’re all connected, all related. We’re in desperate need of ubuntu these days.

As the Moon in Libra opposes the Sun in Aries, both at 12 degrees, they square Jupiter in nurturing, familial Cancer. These planets in action-oriented cardinal signs are sure to catalyze group events,… With both benefics so well placed and no planets retrograde, things can happen quickly. Let’s focus on that which supports the collective, not just the self.

This is a good time to reach out to someone you’ve fallen out with, perhaps a family member. Ubuntu says that those we most vehemently disagree with reflect our own deep wounds. We are all molded by ancestral trauma. To react to another’s pain with anger and fear diminishes the positive momentum we can create together.

We are karmically bound up with each other, for better or for worse. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. put it, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.”

At this Full Moon, connect with your tribe or family. African people who practice ubuntu believe that community is essential for collective survival, though individual rights are important too. As these two opposites (Libra and Aries) form a polarity, we’re invited to embrace the ubuntu philosophy and view our humanity as a shared endeavor that sustains us all.

Feel the interwoven web of life as a human in relationship with all sentient beings, including nature, animals, and the spirit world. Do your best to see yourself as interconnected with others, even those you despise. Prioritize the well-being of the whole.”

Another consideration is how we set up our social environment and what that reveals about ourselves and what we wish to display or project to others…April Elliot Kent offers us some wise counsel from her life and from her writings on how best to negotiate these Libran qualities in a more real and balanced way… She writes:

A Libra Full Moon highlights our desire to make things lovely, pleasing, and harmonious. It reflects our instinct to present ourselves in ways that others will enjoy. People tend to like us better when they’re not forced to confront our rough edges—our impatience, self-centeredness, or morning breath. Libra describes the social sensitivity and good manners that, like a scented candle (or a good toothpaste), soften some of our less appealing qualities…. However…

Full Moons often bring tension to the surface. We can feel pulled in different directions—between what we want and what others expect, between honesty and harmony. At times like these, it helps to step away from the noise and return to something simple and grounding. Instead of trying to manage every interaction, consider moving toward what feels safe and genuine. Create a small pocket of comfort. Stay home if you need to. Rest. Reconnect with what feels real….

We sometimes imagine that Libra asks us to always be nice and give in to others, but that’s not quite true. Libra asks us to balance our needs with the needs of others

I’m a big fan of sensitivity and courtesy. But sometimes, you have to do something that feels selfish or impolite. Say no. Skip the party. Ask for what you need. Relationships require that we walk a fine line between honoring ourselves and respecting others, and there are times when the only honest choice is to put yourself first.

What are you hiding? A musty odor concealed by scented candles? A blotchy complexion covered by expensive makeup? Resentment about putting others first too often, masked by a cheerful smile?

I’m not suggesting we throw consideration for others out the window. But under a Libra Full Moon, why not pull in the welcome mat for a few days, light some unscented candles, and offer a little more kindness in your own direction…”

A last consideration for these hours around the full moon… Since this polarity is one that focuses on the self vs. others, there can be a lack of awareness on how differences can be resolved and how any relationship can learn how to complement and balance one another.

When the partners know how to balance out one another, they can be very helpful in shortcutting any problems or reducing places of friction. They can function as a relational mirror of who you are, and what you represent or display towards others…

Some theorists say that each of the six polarities we have during each full moon acts as complementary opposites and not always a harsh contrast or an obstinate antagonism.

Just like in physical exercise, we have pairs of “antagonistic” muscles ( most easily seen in your arms and legs). There are muscles that work in opposition or in complement to one another, so do the qualities and characteristics of the signs act in their best way to complement and balance the actions of the other… You could say that they “finish” one another in that they provide for complete motion, movement, and assist each other in completing any task- be it squatting down, or picking up a box, etc.

When each pair of signs mirrors the other, they can supportively display the problematic behavior and then reflect it back; this can show the partner what might be lacking or what lessons or insights the person needs or that is required to learn… The polarities can be seen as a means to build self-knowledge, empathy, and understanding of one another.

By showing where the imbalance is, or where the less desirable qualities and traits are being expressed, they can learn to work cooperatively that promotes reciprocal growth; This mirroring functions best when it teaches lessons about the whole person, and can provide an equilibrium and humility (and quite a few laughs!) as it provides a more balanced perspective for any relationship or for any connection between them…
