Welcome to the many layered, multifaceted world of Gemini!

Gemini is most widely known as the twins… or a sign that has two distinct natures or two different sides to it… but it is much closer to a wheel or possibilities! While not as structured as the other mutable signs of Virgo, or as idealist and far reaching as Sagittarius, nor acts as a living kaleidoscope that is Pisces, Gemini holds its own while showing off its many versions and varieties!

Maybe Gemini is more suited to living out new moon possibilities because it opens us to new, often unexplored dimensions of who we are and how we function as human beings. Gemini rules or favors communication, dialogue, reason, logic and the capacity to think and respond with a cogent language that expresses our ideas and names our values.

Because the new moon is similar to a new door standing in front of us, and encourages that curiosity asks us to open and explore, Gemini brings with it a human dimension that neither Aries nor Taurus could demonstrate- that of ideas and actions motivated by thought…

On the surface of things ( and that is one of the critiques of Geminis- that they are curious but do not deep in or go beyond simple curiosity or delve too far into emotions. (Cancer),

Gemini offers us more of an overview that anticipates the more dramatic and powerful aspects and actions that are to follow in early summer… Allied with this overview, here are the descriptive words of Lynn Hayes, astrologer and author, who describes the qualities of this new moon in these words:

“Under the influence of the Gemini New Moon this week we put aside our prejudices in favor of keeping an open mind. Gemini doesn’t judge, but instead encourages us to consider all kinds of viewpoints without prejudice. Through this open perspective we are able to learn a great deal about life, and about ourselves through the lens of our experiences.

Under the influence of the Gemini New Moon we become more curious about everything and crave new experiences. Learning and absorbing new information is key! But the chart for the New Moon contains a thread of the Dark Feminine, suggesting that there is something deep within waiting to be discovered at this New Moon. (Venus opposing Pluto, Black Moon Lilith opposing the Sun and Moon.)

A SuperMoon at the New Moon lunar phase amplifies the energies of the lunation just as it amplifies the gravitational pull on the ocean tides. New Moons begin a new lunar cycle, taking us through the zodiac one month at a time and teaching the lessons of each sign in sequence. As we move from Taurus to Gemini, we are giving up some of the security of Taurus in order to expand our horizons under Gemini.”

An influencing factor, or maybe I should say that lack of influencing factors for this new moon is that it is by in large unaspected or without major influences from the other planets. This gives us a more direct, plain spoken description of Gemini energies and how the quality of communication has its clear value and importance for us.

Some astrologers mourn the fact that it is standing alone or without other planetary assistance… My take on this is different; I see it as free and unencumbered, and it has a strength and a clarity of its own, and can give itself permission to speak and write and offer its own mental and verbal insights to us…

Astrologer, therapist and author, Suzanne Gerber gives us some insights on how Gemini favors language and how giving something a name alters or shifts our understanding of it…

She writes:

“Naming anything – a person, a pet, a book – is a delicious, creative, and powerful experience, a chance to step into Mercury’s winged shoes. By naming something, we define it. We tell the world what it is, before it gets a chance to declare itself on its own terms. It’s the ultimate branding maneuver, as well as the acme of the self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sometimes, as this Mercury-ruled Gemini season reminds us, turning your life around is simply a matter of throwing off your persona and constructing a new one from scraps of memory and imagination. So the Gemini New Moon is a good time to think about what you call yourself – not just your name, but your titles: mother, son, wife, CEO.

And most of all, to rethink the secret names you call yourself, some of which – like playground nicknames – probably aren’t very nice.

You’re not just one thing.

As much as impish Mercury likes the challenge of reducing us to just a few words, even he doesn’t insist that those words remain static. The truth is, no one adjective, no one name, could possibly contain you. You’re not your failures.

You’re not your successes. You’re not the name your family gave you, or the cruel nicknames you were given on the schoolyard. At this magical New Moon, remember everything else that you are. Imagine yourself differently, and give that imagining a bright and joyful name all its own. It’s never too late to be someone new.”

Two more references from the recesses of my memory…

In the Hebrew Scriptures, and in the first chapters of the book of Genesis, that outlines the Creation Story, the Lord God was given the task of naming all the creatures, plants, and life on earth…

While there is a dangerous patriarchal precedent to avoid here, and the erroneous assumption that the Scripture declares that when you name something, you can influence or exert power or control over it…

There is some psychological truth and insight that can be found in the processing of naming whatever issues or concerns you are dealing with in your life…

When something becomes known to you, you become; conscious of it… and in the world of Jungian or archetypal psychology, when you can make the unconscious impulse, emotional pattern, addiction, negative behavior etc., more aware, when you can identify it, name it,  it increases your knowledge of your true self.

Through the process of knowing and naming,we can learn how best to dispel its emotional and deleterious effects of that behavior, and clear those thought patterns, or outlooks it has on you… If you know about it, you can better control or negate its effects and unconscious impulses etc., then it can have a lesser influence on you!

Now with a dash of humorous music nostalgia, there was an old song, “The Name Game” that still can play in my head when I hear someone’s name for the first time- what an earworm that song has become!

Adding to our knowledge and ways to appreciate the energies and potential effects of this new moon, Robin of Wicked Audacity newsletter, gives us a quick run down of what this new moon holds for us according to your rising signs. Here is what Robin teaches about this:

For your rising sign, the Gemini New Moon is opening a flexible new beginning in this part of your chart:

  •  Aries rising: Siblings, neighbors, short trips, practical learning, or the way you get your message out through email, blogs, podcasts, newsletters, Threads, or whatever form of asynchronous communication you prefer to use.
  • Taurus rising: Money, income, spending, possessions, and the resources you have available to work with.
  • Gemini rising: You. Your body, appearance, energy, identity, priorities, and the way you want to move through the world.
  • Cancer rising: Rest, solitude, mental health, hidden stressors, private work, or the things happening behind the scenes.
  • Leo rising: Friends, mentors, social networks, long-term plans, hopes and dreams, or the people who support your future.
  • Virgo rising: Career, reputation, visibility, authority, public roles, or how you want to be known.
  • Libra rising: Higher education, astrology, religion, publishing, long-distance travel, dreams, or something you’re trying to understand from a bigger perspective.
  • Scorpio rising: Debt, taxes, inheritances, shared resources, fear, death, or the financial and emotional things tied up with other people.
  • Sagittarius rising: Partnerships, clients, contracts, marriage, legal agreements, or open enemies.
  • Capricorn rising: Work, health, coworkers or employees, pets, obligations, or the things you feel like you have to deal with.
  • Aquarius rising: Children, dating, romance, hobbies, or the things you do for fun.
  • Pisces rising: Home, parents, family foundations, property, land, inheritance, or the place you return to when everything else gets loud.

Lastly, while I could remind you that Mercury turns retrograde on the 29th, and then repeat all of those cautions, I prefer to emphasize the significant movement of the planet Venus during this new moon time period. It is the entry of Venus into Leo!

 Here is what Robin, astrologer and author of Wicked Audacity weekly newsletter, has to say about this ingress and what we can expect from Venus in Leo. She writes;

The bigger story is that Venus moves into Leo which changes the tone of pleasure, attraction, beauty, art, and relationships.

Venus in Leo is more expressive than Venus in Cancer, so pleasure, attraction, and affection become warmer, louder, and more interested in being appreciated. People may be more generous with what they love, more dramatic in how they show it, and more sensitive when their efforts go unnoticed.

The challenge is that wanting to be loved can get tangled up with wanting to be admired. If people feel ignored, underappreciated, or taken for granted, the reaction may be bigger than expected.

Lastly, in a juxtaposition from how I most often use Lena’s words, I am citing her ideas as my conclusion for my report this time… Here is her moon update for my closing thoughts:

“This moon supports communication, self-expression, social connections and interactions. It is a good time to reevaluate how you communicate.

Do you speak your truth, say what you mean, listen to others without judgment and express what is in your heart?  Are you adaptable, flexible and open to new ideas?

Take a break during this moon time from anything burdensome and heavy in your life. There is a social atmosphere to this time that nurtures good exchange and sharing with family and friends.

Take advantage of the respite, bring in the field of joy, be aware of what you have in life that brings you balance, and enjoy the process of living instead of focusing on what needs fixing.”
