Fate and Destiny

The disinherited will know for themselves that here is a Spirit at work in life, 

and in the hearts of men which is committed to overcoming the world. 

It is universal, knowing no age, no race, no culture and no condition of [humankind.] 

For the privileged and the underprivileged alike, if the individual put at the disposal of the Spirit

 the needful dedication and discipline, [he] can live effectively in the chaos present the high destiny as a

[son] of God.

Matthew Fox adds these thoughts for us to ponder:

Thurman believes we can live the “high destiny” of a son or daughter of God  in the real world. 

He believes that the Spirit that teaches us the way is universal, and not subject to any age, race, or culture. We can achieve this if we put ourselves ”at the disposal of the Spirit” and commit ourselves to dedication and discipline. Have you made such a commitment? Do you feel that you are on the path of high destiny?

Destiny is a word that is not well understood, although everyone has what would be considered to be a common knowledge definition. Destiny is different from fate, even though they are often confused. Fate is the most passive and pessimistic belief- It is the most fatalistic, as it is an unknowing, unconscious outlook that declares there really is nothing I can do that will alter the course or outcome of my life!

From classical Greek thought, you were given a life cord or a string of years… when fate says it’s over, the gods cut the string! Fate is designed or created supernaturally- it is determined by the realm of the gods, and we humans have no power over it.

Destiny is softer, or more in line with the idea of self-determination, but not too much! It declares that everyone has a destiny that is laid out for them, and then based on certain changes in their environment, parents, life circumstances, luck, or opportunity, education, training, or skill, etc.

Based on one’s awareness of those variables, they act on those options, and then they can fulfill that purpose or recognize ways to attain that goal. 

One other concept here: Teleology. Teleology deals with the ultimate purpose behind a life, a decision, a choice… Briefly, In the various approaches within theology, we see the purpose of humankind to praise God, to fulfill the Scriptures in our lives, or to ultimately to become Christ-like…

And if not Christian, to be the best human you can be! Teleology affirms and seeks out a more spiritual focus and larger purpose for our lives.
