It is not chaos or death- It is Happiness!

Do you see, O my brothers and sisters?

It is not chaos or death– it is form, union, plan–

It is eternal life– It is Happiness.

Walt Whitman                                                                                                                                     Cited in Mystical Hours

Wayne Teasdale gives us his explanation of Whitman’s vision of our lives and our plan                                  for living in this universe with these words:

“The great American poet, Walt Whitman, viewed this existence through his poetic and mystical intuition.  Here he speaks with poetic authority about the direction towards which we are all moving; eternal life.

He understood that dark notions about death were misunderstandings of why we are here.

What we find here is evidence of a cosmic plan, which leads to union with the divine. We are destined for this high estate of eternal happiness.

It takes wisdom, divine illumination, to give us our direction to our home. If we can become inwardly attuned to the Divine Presence within, we will understand our nature and our ultimate belonging to God.”

In an earlier reflection, I briefly spoke about chaos and order… And it might remain elusive IF we only see to understand scientifically or from a rational theological outlook. Here, we are given one of my beloved poets; who was less known for his reasons than for his divine reveries or his hint of madness,… Also, for his vision of America and life on earth as possessing a noble cause and an exalting purpose.

He possessed such hope for humanity and for the upsurging of a virtuous result for every human life, that his perception of life and living out loud a life that is worth living; it did not include any fearful apprehension about death, and he made no room for it when he took a more metaphysical view of life. He simply declared that each of us has a part or a role to play, a design to finish, a destiny to fulfill…

As best as I can understand it, Whitman sees any upsets, changes of plans, and any disappointments as just a part of the chaos in our lives, that is ultimately designed to refine our thinking, purify our hearts, and uplift our souls.

That there is nothing to fear about death, as it is just the final stage of life– and that we humans are “entitled” to experience happiness all along the way; IF we are open to God’s leading and welcome the results of our intuitive knowing that can assist us in overcoming any chaotic situation or setbacks in our lives.
